Unusual spaces are no problem

Need furniture to work around a corner, between existing seating, or in a room where store-bought dimensions simply do not work? These projects show how a custom footprint can turn difficult space into useful storage and surface area.

Any size or configuration

Widths, heights, door arrangements, open shelves and countertops can all be changed. The 48-inch entertainment center shown with a fireplace is one example, not a fixed model.

Custom-sized cabinet drawers

Make lower cabinets easier to use

Pull-out drawers can be sized for under-sink areas, smaller bottom cabinets and other hard-to-reach spaces. Other sizes and special needs are available.

Side-by-side comparison of plywood, particle board and MDF

The Elite difference

What is inside your furniture matters.

Two cabinets can look similar when they are new but perform very differently over time. Elite builds the main cabinet structure from layered plywood because it holds screws and hardware securely, stands up better to daily use and is less likely to fall apart if it is exposed to a small amount of moisture.

  • 01
3/4-inch plywood for the main structureThe thicker panel provides a strong foundation for cabinet sides, bottoms, shelves and hardware.
  • 02
1/2-inch plywood where a lighter panel is appropriateIt provides real layered-wood construction for components that do not require the extra thickness of a 3/4-inch panel.
  • 03
Layers you can actually seeEach wood layer runs across the next one, helping the panel resist splitting while giving screws solid material to grip.

Know what you are buying

Plywood, particle board and MDF are not the same.

Each material has a useful purpose, but they do not provide the same strength or moisture resistance. Here is the practical difference for furniture and cabinets.

COMMON IN LOW-COST FURNITURE

Particle Board

What it is: Wood chips and sawdust are mixed with adhesive and compressed under heat into a flat sheet. It is not made from continuous layers of wood.

Where it works best

Low-cost, dry indoor furniture with a laminate covering and little need to move or repeatedly remove hardware.

What to consider

  • Usually inexpensive and flat
  • Can swell, soften and crumble when water reaches the core
  • Screws can loosen or tear out more easily
  • Chipped or water-damaged edges are difficult to repair
The tradeoff: The lower price comes with reduced fastener strength, repairability and moisture tolerance.
BEST FOR VERY SMOOTH PAINTED PARTS

MDF

What it is: Wood is refined into very fine fibers, mixed with wax and resin, then pressed into a dense, uniform sheet.

Where it works best

Painted decorative panels, trim and routed profiles where a smooth, grain-free surface is more important than low weight.

What to consider

  • Paints very smoothly and has no knots or grain voids
  • Heavy compared with plywood
  • Standard MDF can absorb water and swell permanently
  • Edges generally hold screws less securely than plywood
The tradeoff: MDF can be excellent for selected painted details, but plywood is the better choice for Elite’s load-bearing cabinet structure.
